October 2013 Full Moon Sequence is: Halloween Yoga!

CatIt’s Halloween Yoga!!

This moon there will be many tricks, and, the treat is the great feeling you leave with once you are done this halloween themed kids yoga sequence. For the uninterrupted slide show, please visit the “color” tab. We will be trying on all the different yoga costumes, parading the streets as a zombies, and flying like bats to a graveyard where we will finish as corpse’s! Make space, be safe, and, breathe.

First, start off in hairy gorilla costumes, breathing, Have a seat with your kids and take a moment to say hello, see how everyone is feeling, and, center. Once you have chimed in, ask them  to bring the feet into criss cross, or, soles together, and, take hold of the ankles. You are a pack of hairy gorillas, breathing in, making a grunting sound, and, bringing the chest up and forward, rolling the shoulders back. On the out breath, the opposite movement. Releasing the breath through a long neck, and, hiding the chest behind shoulders rolled forward. Repeating this movement and breathe mindfully until hips are loose, everyone is energized, you can also wave the arms in the air, tap the chest with hands, and, a screech, for added gorilla fun. Gorilla

After some quality time breathing in gorilla suits, start prowling the streets as cats and cows. Ask the children to come to hands and knees (& lower legs) for this great torso and spine loosening mini sequence. Cat and cow are also great for breathing, moving and making noise, getting kids interested in the sequence. Set the scene, you are on your hands and knees,  as cats and cows, looking for treats!  Continue reading

Classroom Yoga is the September 2013 fullmoonyoga Coloring Sequence

TreeThis moon’s sequence, September 19th 2013, at 4am, is for back to schoolers. Going back to school is exciting, fun, and sometimes produces anxiety in children. Adjusting from being outside, under the long, summer sun, to being inside more, during fall’s diminishing light, is a challenging change for everyone, and, yoga can help.

This sequence is short and sweet, it works on countering the effects of sitting, and can also be calming and focusing.  This moon, we have 15 poses to color, with 2 minis and 1 partner pose. I would suggest it as a 20 to 25 minute yoga recess to re center your class and “reboot” the students energy. Check back in early October for the color, smartboard version of this sequence.Down Dog

Again this moon, I am using, The Kids Yoga 100, quotes on how to for each slide (where applicable), which can be found on amazon and at my publishers shop.

July 22nd, 2013, fullmoonyoga Coloring Sequence: A Hike in the Forest!

Criss Cross ApplesauceThis month’s coloring sequence is, “A Hike in the Forest” includes 17 individual coloring poses, 3 mini sequences and 1 partner pose. (Please note, the coloring gallery has also been updated for the sheets below). The quotes on the gallery/print off for each slide are from my book,  the Kids Yoga 100: An Interactive Coloring Book for Children and the Adults in their lives. To sun the sequence up briefly, this July full moon, first off, we will center ourselves in criss cross applesauce, breathing, perhaps doing some shoulder and neck rolls (head down, chin draws a half circle from shoulder to shoulder on chest), and a few “Oms”,for lung stretching and warm up (we also finish in this pose).  After criss cross, we calm ourselves, in mouse pose, with the head on the mat and paws stretched out in front, loosening the shoulders and stretching the arms, legs bent and tucked under the torso.  Once calm and feeling good in mouse, press four paws into the mat and raise the hips in the opposite direction, for downward dog. Give a few good howls while exhaling, after inhaling deeply, before raising your leg, to one leg dog. See more detailed “how to” on each gallery slide and …. don’t forget one leg dog on the  other leg, before hopping along the hiking path, in the forest, like a frog… Continue reading

June 2013 Full Moon Yoga Coloring Sequence: Paddle Board Yoga!

fmy.junesccolor

This month of June, 2013, we have a super moon upon us, on June 23rd. From what I understand, this means that the moon will be very close to earth, relative to other full moons observed this year. Here in Lake Tahoe, California, we love to paddle board, so, this month we have a, stand up paddleboard yoga sequence, that you can do under the light of this June super moon, for those who don’t mind getting a bit wet once in a while*!

First we start off in butterfly (to read more on how to see gallery of coloring pages), feet together, knees to the side, spine straight, shoulders rolled back, loosen your heart and smile for a few moments, center and listen to the sound of the water rippling against the paddleboard. Once centered, and thankful for yoga time,  move onto hands and knees for some balancing fun. Take some time, with torso extended, grounding through the lower legs, hips over knees, shoulders over hands, arms extended, in table (see mini sequences in gallery), find your balance, breath, before doing some cat and cow stretching. Hiss… Moo….

Kids Yoga Games

Down DogOne of the biggest smile generators in the kids yoga classes I run, are games. Kids love playing games! After a long day at school, a fun moving game is often necessary to help “shake the ants out of their pants” from sitting most of the day. Games can be non competitive, or,  the competitive aspect of a game can be de emphasized by focusing on other rewards, in yoga. One of the greatest things about this gentle practice is that each child leaves the class feeling as though they have “won”. Most adults experience this too, and, usually identify it as one of the greatest benefits of yoga. So, after centering my class with a criss cross applesauce  and a “hello and how are you feeling” circle, I like to play a game. The following are 3 of my favorites; freeze pose, yoga story sequence chain and musical mats. There is a brief explanation of each game and some print outs to help you with equipment needed. These games are suggestions on how to use the Kids Yoga 100 Coloring Book, and can also be found on the Kids Yoga 100, Games tab, of this site, as suggestions on how to use the coloring book.
